I discovered the importance of our Emotional Assets after my own Mom died from cancer when she was just 48 years old.
I was only 21 at the time.
Despite having plenty of time to accept that she was going to die, we were not prepared for her death and although she had written a Will, I quickly learned that inheriting her car and some cash just wasn’t enough.
Few appreciated the challenges I faced in light of my loss.
My world had been transformed from a stable and supportive place to somewhere unsteady and foggy with grief. Mum’s love – the most important ingredient in my life, the fuel with which every mother feeds her child – had gone. In its place was the ‘gaping void’ of grief.
I remember wishing I had a way to reconnect with my mother’s love, especially during birthdays and celebrations – previously joyous occasions that had become Lonely Landmarks.
I yearned for something to help me maintain the fading connection – a letter for the worst moments in life, something that captured her familiar words “it will be allright darling,” or a video that showed her freckly face breaking into a cheeky grin as she collapsed into one of her fits of giggles. I wanted to know the story of her life to read time and time again. To learn more about who she was, what she believed in and the choices she has made in her life.
I wanted anything that captured the affection of which my mum had once been the source, to remind me of her love, and offer a glimmer of hope in my darkest hour.
A legacy of mum’s love would have helped to prevent my connection with her from fading, while reducing my suffering and motivating me when times were tough. Sadly my Mom didn’t get the chance to do this.
